North Washington Street Bridge Replacement with Temporary Bridge

Below is the construction look ahead for the North Washington Street Bridge Replacement Project as provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).

Demolition and Site Preparation:
Continued removal of the center lane median, protection of electrical lines and utilities, and demolition of the western sidewalk (Charles River side) and adjacent Harborwalk underpass using barge-mounted cranes and other equipment stationed in the water. Pothole repairs on both sides of the street. Begin installation of bridge bents (vertical supports) for the temporary bridge.

Work Hours: Feb. 4 – Feb. 15 on weekdays during the daytime (7 a.m. – 6 p.m.) and Feb. 10 – Feb. 15 at nighttime (11 p.m. – 6 a.m.)

Travel Impacts: Feb. 4 – Feb. 15 on weekdays during off-peak daytime hours (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.), and Feb. 10 – Feb. 15 during off-peak nighttime hours (11 p.m. – 6 a.m.), inbound traffic will be reduced to one lane on the bridge to create a work zone for sidewalk demolition. During off-peak daytime hours on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, inbound traffic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and outbound traffic from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be reduced to one lane on the bridge to allow for pothole repairs.

Utility Relocation:
Continued utility relocation and upgrades on the southern end of the bridge at Keany Square will continue weekdays and on Saturdays by Eversource.

Work Hours: Daytime on weekdays (7 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and Saturdays (7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

Travel Impacts: During off-peak hours, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, inbound traffic will be diverted around Eversource work zones at the Keany Square intersection. All turn movements will be maintained, with two inbound lanes available during the morning peak hours.
