North End Resident Hillary Throckmorton to Run First Boston Marathon

North End resident & Bangor native, Hillary Throckmorton will be running 26.2 miles in her first Boston Marathon on April 16th as part of the David Ortiz Children’s Fund charity team. A die-hard Red Sox fan, Throckmorton was further motivated to join the team given the Fund’s mission of providing lifesaving heart surgeries for children in the Dominican Republic and New England.

“David Ortiz is one of the most generous and big-hearted icons of Boston so I am honored to run for his charity team and help support an amazing cause,” said Throckmorton. “Knowing the funds we raise will help many children and their families live healthier and happier lives will make every step I take that day worth it.”

Growing up in Bangor, Throckmorton remembers going to several Red Sox games with her family and grandmother, who Throckmorton says is Big Papi’s #1 fan. In recent years Throckmorton’s grandmother, Ansley Throckmorton took the family to Puerto Rico for her birthday, expressing that all she wanted for a gift was an Ortiz jersey. As soon as the jersey was gifted, she wore it every day. Throckmorton plans to bring her grandmother as her guest to the celebratory post-Marathon party that David Ortiz will host for his team of “pinch runners.”

“The numbers of children that need our help continues to grow so I need my pinch runners now more than I ever did during my baseball career. I’m grateful to have a team of runners for this year’s Marathon who share my dream, but I also want everyone to know that you don’t need to be a runner to be part of a winning team.” – David Ortiz

Throckmorton joins 11 other dedicated “pinch runners” as part of this year’s #PinchRun4Papi Marathon team who will race and raise funds for the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. In partnership with MassGeneral Hospital for Children and CEDIMAT Hospital in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the Fund has saved over 670 children’s lives. Through this year’s Marathon efforts, the newly launched campaign, #PinchRun4Papi, aims to raise an additional $170,000 toward lifesaving heart surgeries for 34 children by April 16th.

To assist with reaching her personal fundraising goal of $7,500, Throckmorton will host a fundraiser on Friday, March 2nd from 7pm-10pm at Lansdowne Pub in Fenway. Throckmorton’s friends, family and anyone interested in attending to support the cause can come out for an evening of music, food, and a chance to win one or several raffle items, including gift certificates to local restaurants, fitness boutiques and more.
