MassArt Bakalar & Paine Galleries Announce Fall 2017 Exhibitions

Massachusetts College of Art and Design’s (MassArt) Bakalar & Paine Galleries announce its fall 2017 exhibitions: Chinese Dreams and Selections, on view September 25 – December 2, 2017. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.
Chinese Dreams
The artists in this exhibition were shaped by the Cultural Revolution. Some were young children when it began, others were born during it, and one was born in its wake. Through their work in traditional Chinese media like porcelain, bronze, and painting, as well as radical forms of expression that relate to destruction like ash and razor blades, each has helped inform China’s subsequent outlook on its history.
Selections
MassArt faculty are accomplished working artists and designers also dedicated to educating the next generation of leaders in the field. The perennial exhibition, Selections, showcases the current work of faculty who are newly hired or returning from sabbatical. Discover new bodies of work and experimentation in different media from a wide array of disciplines.
About the UNBOUND Campaign
In May 2016, MassArt officially kicked off the public phase of UNBOUND: Campaign for the Bakalar & Paine Galleries with a $1 million gift from Pace Gallery founder and MassArt alumnus Arne Glimcher (BA’60, Painting). To date, MassArt has raised $8.2 million towards the $12 million total for the project. UNBOUND will fund a transformative revitalization of the 8,000 square foot, three-floor gallery space, which currently showcases four exhibitions per year by some of the world’s most influential, established, and emerging contemporary artists. Campaign funds will support restoration and preservation within the historic galleries that occupy one of the original campus buildings. Renovations will allow for improved public access with a visible street-side front entrance on Huntington Avenue, new climate and relative humidity control systems that will allow for year-round programming, an elevator, new curatorial offices, a new gallery education room, an expanded preparatory workshop, and visitor amenities. designLAB Architects and Dimeo Construction have been selected for the project.
