Trash and Recycling Update: Residents are Complying Better With New Schedule

City Councilor Sal LaMattina and Boston Public Works Recycling Coordinator, Brian Kaufman, spoke at the July 10, 2014 North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) meeting. As of July 1st, there is no longer any trash pickup on Wednesdays and recycling has been added to Monday’s pickup.

According to officials, residents have significantly improved compliance with the new trash and recycling schedule since the first week. In addition to less trash being mistakenly put out on Wednesdays, the amount of recycling on Mondays has been substantial and is already over half the amount picked up on Fridays. Recycling also saves the city money generating about $4-$5 per ton depending on commodity prices versus the cost of regular trash disposal at over $60 per ton.
