On March 15, 2014, NEMPAC and North Bennet Street School are collaborating to create “O Sole Mio”. A truly unique combination of vocal performances and informal lectures that hopes to create a newfound appreciation for the Italian heritage that flows so strongly through the North End. Sponsored by the Friends of the Italian Consulate Center of Boston, the event is set to take place at 2:30 p.m. at 150 North Street. The workshop will last about an hour with a lite reception to follow where the audience can meet and interact with the performers.
The creator of “O Sole Mio” (My Own Sun), Adrian Sahlean, is an Italian professor, musician and writer from the Longy School of Music of Bard College. His passion for music and it’s effect on people are what inspired him to organize this program. When asked to define Neapolitan song for people who aren’t musically trained, he responded “[It] is very traditional Italian music, it lies in their hearts and connects them as a people”.
Sahlean will lead three classical singers as they present the audience with songs that are probably familiar to most, yet unknown in their origin. “These are the songs people hum as they walk. You may not know them, but you find it easy to sing along” Sahlean said of the nature of the music. Of course, singing along isn’t required, but the audience is sure to have a connection with the performances.
Hosting Sahlean’s creation in North End is appropriate. The sense of community is palpable within the neighborhood, and “O Sole Mio” only strives to strengthen it. The italian culture already surrounds and consumes every street in the North End. This program will be about learning and understanding that culture so that we all can reach a new level of appreciation.
North End Music and Performing Arts Center is a small non-profit organization that has been bringing music, theater and dance to the North End since 2001.
