Friday News & Views: Primary Election Surprise, Mayor Vetos Redistricting; Feast Moments and Roses Photo

[forecast]

What’s Going On Friday, September 7, 2012:

The annual Boston “ahts” Festival comes to the neighborhood on Saturday and Sunday at Christopher Columbus Park. See the flyer. And, if you’re religious, you can prepare with an all-night vigil starting at 9pm at St. Leonard Church in honor of St. Padre Pio’s 125th birthday and 10th anniversary of his cannonization. See their website.

The Events Calendar has all the details. Please check with organizers for last minute changes.

What’s new and exciting on the blog:

It was a primary election surprise with Patty Campatelli narrowly defeating City Councilor Sal LaMattina for Register of Probate. North Ender, Bobby Dello Russo, also lost his campaign to unseat Maura Hennigan for Clerk of Courts (Criminal). Read about these races and all the election results.

Under the radar, but worth viewing:

Mayor Menino vetoed the City Council’s plan for redistricting, including changes to the North End / Waterfront. See the Mayor’s letter.

Just For Fun:

It seems like a distant memory, but we select some “moment” shots from photographer Jeff Tamagini’s Fisherman’s Feast gallery.

Featured:

The North End / Waterfront Neighborhood Council gets back to work in September. NEWNC has published Monday’s agenda. The meeting is open to the public.

Neighborhood Photo of the Day:

Before the winter winds arrive, let’s take a moment to remember the glorious spring this year where it was a banner year at the Rose F. Kennedy Rose Garden in Christopher Columbus Park. I took the picture, but they made the roses.

  1. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy waking up and being greeted by these gorgeous neighborhood photos each day. It really starts the day off right and today you’ve got me thinking about planting bulbs. Thanks so much.
