ABCD Tax Counseling for Senior Citizens

Seniors: Visit ABCD Tax Counseling for Elders Program Site to Access Significant Tax Credits

ABCD Tax Services are Free and Easily Accessible!

Local senior citizens may be eligible to receive up to $970 from the state government through the “Circuit Breaker Tax Credit”. This credit is available to all eligible seniors who pay unsubsidized rent or property taxes and is retroactive for three years. The “Circuit Breaker” offers a tremendous financial opportunity for those who qualify.

Seniors can apply for the Circuit Breaker and receive other tax services at ABCD’s downtown headquarters, 178 Tremont St., Boston, near the Green, Orange, Red and Silver lines! Services are also available at neighborhood sites throughout the City of Boston. For more information, call 617-348-6588.

Seniors should be aware of reports that a local preparer is charging $50 to process the Circuit Breaker credit without determining whether seniors are eligible for it. As a result, some seniors end up having to return the money to the state Department of Revenue and incurring penalties and fees. Seniors who are faced with this problem can work with ABCD and the state Department of Revenue to refund the money and have the penalties reversed.

ABCD’s Financial Futures Initiative (FFI) program received a grant this year from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide the Tax Counseling for Elders (TCE) program in collaboration with ABCD Elder Services. With the support of the IRS, this grant allows ABCD to expand upon already-existing tax services and offer specialized tax assistance to senior citizens. It also enables the ABCD Financial Futures Initiative’s income-maximizing and asset-building resources to reach more older adults and meet their financial needs.
