Greenway Carousel Study Community Meeting Notice

The following meeting notice is courtesy of the Greenway Conservancy. See the Community Calendar for all neighborhood meetings and events.

What: Greenway Carousel Study Community Meeting
When: Wednesday, September 29, 6-8PM
Where: The New England Aquarium Harborside Learning Lab

The Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is planning a series of public meetings to explore a proposal for a new, custom carousel on the Greenway thanks to a gift to support the planning and design of this potential addition to the parks. An initial amount of $225,000 in seed money from The Boston Foundation has been committed by an anonymous donor, with the expectation that the total gift will be $1 million, when the process of fully developing the idea is completed by the Conservancy. The first phase would involve a period of study to determine the viability of the plan.

The existing Greenway Carousel, which is a rental, has proven to be a very popular addition to the Parks and a major attractor for children and families. Unfortunately, it has its limitations. The Conservancy is examining options for incorporating weather protection systems and a place for parents to watch and wait while being protected from the sun.  Unlike the current carousel, the custom carousel would reflect the rich geographic location of the Greenway, a ribbon of contemporary urban parks connecting the land, sea and City. If all goes well, it would be installed in 2012.

As part of the study, the Conservancy is organizing community meetings as well as design and brainstorming sessions for children. These “children’s charrettes” will take place at various schools over the next several weeks.

Please join us at our first community meeting on Wednesday, September 29, 6-8PM at The New England Aquarium Harborside Learning Lab to learn more about the potential new carousel. Bring your great ideas and stop by! No reservation is required. (The Harborside Learning Lab, in the Ocean Center, is on the ground floor of the Harbor Garage and is accessible by the MBTA blue line Aquarium stop.)
