LaMattina Issues Letter Asking for Extension of City’s HazMat Ban

NoHazMatSignDistrict 1 City Councilor Sal LaMattina sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation asking Secretary LaHood and Administrator Ferro to extend the daytime ban of hazardous material trucks in the City of Boston.

“Residents and business owners in Boston’s North End neighborhood, which I represent, are understandably concerned about giving free rein to hazmat trucks. This is a group that just withstood a dozen years of 24-hour-a-day construction during the Big Dig, as well as the constant traffic of tour buses. They’re not pampered whiners.”

The letter goes on to say that “the overwhelming feeling is that the route used for the past four years is fine and that allowing access to Commercial Street during the day is problematic, as it is primarily a residential area, including housing for seniors, neighborhood businesses and parks.”
