Boston Public School Registration Starts January 4th

Boston Public Schools registration for the 2010-2011 school year starts on Monday, January 4

Students entering Kindergarten, Grade 6 or Grade 9 may register during the month of January

BOSTON – Boston Public Schools (BPS) announces the start of the registration process for the 2010-2011 school year. The first round of registration runs from January 4 – February 5, 2010 and is open to students entering Kindergarten, Grade 6 or Grade 9.

How to Register

·          Parents/guardians of new-to-BPS students must visit one of BPS Family Resource Centers (FRC) to register their child(ren) for school.  To save time, parents may begin the process online using the district’s pre-registration site, BPSExpress; however, the registration process must be completed in person at an FRC. The FRCs have extended hours during the next four weeks of registration, including new Saturday hours at the East Zone FRC. A complete list of locations and hours is below.

·          Students who are currently enrolled in the BPS will receive their applications from their school. They do not need to apply in person at an FRC.

When to Register

·          To increase the chances of receiving an assignment to a school of choice, students registering for Kindergarten, Grade 6 and Grade 9 should apply between January 4 and February 5.  Parents of current BPS K0 (3 year old) and K1 (4 year old) students who would like to request a transfer may also do so during this time by visiting an FRC.

·          To avoid long lines, we recommend the following schedule, based on the first initial of either parent’s last name:

A – I, January 4 – 8, 2010
J – Q, January 11 – 15, 2010
R – Z, January 19 – 22, 2010
Open to all, January 25 – February 5, 2010

·          Starting February 10, 2010, parents may register children for all grades (K-12). Transfers for all grades may be submitted during this period also.

What to bring to the FRC

·          At least three preprinted proofs of Boston residency (a list of accepted proofs is listed at www.bostonpublicschools.org/residency)

·          An original birth certificate (with raised seal), passport, or Form I-9 for children registering for Kindergarten (K0, K1, and K2) or Grade 1

·          Up-to-date immunization records

·          For parents who have used BPSExpress online pre-registration service, the printed confirmation slip.

Tips for Registering

·          Parents should list at least 5 school choices on the application form.

·          Since each of Boston’s schools has something unique to offer, the best way to determine which ones may be a good fit for a student is to visit. There is still time to visit schools during School Preview Time, which continues through January 22.
