By Carl Ameno, Director of the North End Nazzaro Community Center

The Boston Police District A-1, Community Service Office, represented by Sergeant Tom Lema and Officer Dave Saddler, gave the children and parents of the Nazzaro Center a real frosty reception on a recent summer afternoon by showing up with an ice cream truck and giving out over 100 Hoodsies. On a warm, hazy mid- September when temperatures hit the mid-80’s, the Boston Police surprised dozens of the center’s after school participants and their parents by pulling into the playground and capping off a near perfect day by distributing Hoodsie ice creams just as the afternoon was coming to a close.

This latest gesture was just one of many that the District A-1 Community Service Office has favored theNorth End community with. They have also recently sponsored an inter-neighborhood basketball tournament, annually sponsor a summer field trip to Water Country and participate heavily every winter (both financially and as chaperones) in the center’s yearly overnight ski trip to Vermont. The Nazzaro Center and the North End community are lucky indeed to have such concerned partners in the police department and cannot thank their efforts enough. An additional shout-out to two other members of the community service team, Officer Teddy Boyle and Captain Bernie O’Rourke.
