The land on which the church sits has been a worshiping site for the past 300 years, dating back to the 1700s when it was used for a Congregational Society. Today, St. Stephen’s is the last Boston church still standing that was designed by famed architect, Charles Bulfinch. The bell tower also holds a bell made by Boston’s most famous midnight rider – Paul Revere.
Recent inspections showed that the bell tower is in need of repair, as much of the wood has been found to have rot and the entire structure needs to be repainted with a weather-resistant paint. The historic bell tower received $125,000 in State funding earlier this year, and North End neighbors and supporters of the church are helping to fund the remaining balance.
