The Printing Office of Edes & Gill will be leaving the Clough House in Boston’s North End in the space adjacent to Old North Church on the Freedom Trail. The news was posted this week on Old North’s blog.

Print master Gary Gregory has run the colonial printing shop for the past seven years and will depart from the Old North Church historic site on March 18, 2018. The operation included an 18th century style copper plate rolling press, similar to that used by Paul Revere.

The Printing Office of Edes and Gill was named in honor of Benjamin Edes and John Gill, publishers of the Boston Gazette and Country Journal, the most influential patriot newspaper in colonial Boston. The free exhibit showed visitors the craft of colonial printing and how documents like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were printed on an 18th century wooden printing press. Last February after much research, Gregory printed the Boston Edition of the U.S. Constitution for the first time in 231 years.

Captain Jackson’s Historic Chocolate Shop, also located in the Clough House, will remain open to visitors. In its post, Old North announced plans for “Patriot’s Corner,” a rotating exhibition space, to open in May 2018 at the Clough House. The first exhibit will revolve around Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, interpreting the famous poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride”.

The new Patriot’s Corner and the chocolate shop will be part of an $8 visitor admission fee that Old North Church recently announced starting May 2018. Pop-up events will also be held in St. Francis Garden in the center of the Old North campus. North End residents will continue to be admitted free of charge, with other discounts available for schools, groups, EBT holders and for certain events. View more information on the changes starting May 2018.

  1. Mr. Gregory: It is mind-boggling to me that you did years of research, and castings as well as typesetting the document. Best to you in your new adventure — it was lovely to watch you working and providing a taste of history.

  2. Mr. Gregory we live in the North End and have come by your wonderful print shop with visitors including our grandchildren. Our oldest grandson has the print from your shop on his bedroom wall! Thanks for running the educational program and good luck with future endeavors.
