Sushi Rock, a Pan Asian restaurant and Sushi Bar will be opening at 78-80 Salem Street in the North End, at the former location of Pulcinella Mozzarella Bar E Ristorante. Monday night, September 22nd, residents gathered on the sidewalk outside of the new restaurant for an abutters meeting to hear details about the restaurant and raise questions or concerns.
This Asian flare restaurant will feature a full sushi bar, two bars serving beer, wine, and cordials, along with two floors of dining room table setting. The menu will be mostly sushi, with hot and cold appetizers and entres, mainly focusing on sushi and pan-Asian styled dishes, and a possible oyster option. “I think this is something different that will cater to local residents who are looking for something beyond the normal Italian restaurants in the North End,” said Attorney Daniel Toscano. “This will be something new to the North End.” There will be two floors, both floors will have dining tables and a bar with the ground floor being home to the sushi bar. The ground floor will feature 18 dining seats, along with 8-10 seats at the bar. Upstairs floor will hold 30 seats plus an additional 10 seats at the bar.
The original beer, wine and cordials license was set to stop serving alcohol at 11 p.m. but the restaurant has submitted a petition for a 1 a.m. license. “We want to run a classy neighborhood place and we want to be here for a long time,” said owner and manager Nicholas Leo. “We also want to bring something new to the neighborhood and be good neighbors to the residents.”
Per regulations from the city of Boston, the large windows will be closed at 11 p.m. Salem Street residents raised big concerns over noise, and the perceived notion of a roof deck, which was confirmed that there will in fact be no roof deck. Although the restaurant is currently under construction, the owner is hoping to be open for business by the end of this year.
No need for a 1am license.
This is the ruination of the famous North End, with sushi, mexican joints etc. This is not the North End I grew in. What a shame, and especially for the Italian immigrants who made the North End what it was. PATHETIC!

What about the Eastern European and Irish immigrants who lived in the neighborhood BEFORE the Italians? No tears for the absence of corned beef-and-cabbage or matzoh ball soup Vincent?
Heaven forbid the replacement for YET ANOTHER failed cheese/red-sauce restaurant be something OTHER than another cheese/red-sauce restaurant.
Great idea – great proposal run by a good guy who will respect the neighborhood. I hope this gets passed.
