News from the Office of Attorney General Maura Healey:
Attorney General Maura Healey today endorsed two inspiring newcomers running for open seats on the Boston City Council, Lydia Edwards in District 1 and Kim Janey in District 7.
In supporting Janey and Edwards in Tuesday’s election, Healey praised their work on behalf of the people of Boston.
Edwards, a public interest attorney and community advocate, has spent her career fighting for women and working families. Healey and Edwards worked closely together to implement the state’s new law on domestic workers and on a range of wage theft cases.
“I’ve seen first-hand that Lydia can and has made a significant difference in people’s lives, standing up for workers, for women and for the most vulnerable people throughout District 1,” Healey said. “I know Lydia will be a great partner in government as Councilor in my home district and she will always put people first.”
“Maura Healey takes on the big fights at every level of our state and nation,” said Edwards. “With her support, our campaign is really feeling the momentum at just the right time and we can’t wait to get out the vote on Tuesday.”
Janey, who leads the education policy work at a local non-profit, advocating for Boston’s children and families, has been praised for groundbreaking work to help close the opportunity gap for students and her efforts to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline too pervasive in our communities. She founded the Historic Moreland Street Neighborhood Association and helped found the voting rights group MassVOTE and served on the board of directors for a decade.
“For 20 years, Kim Janey has been a passionate voice for Boston’s children and our community,” said Healey. “Kim is a tireless advocate on the issues that matter, always leads with her values and will be a strong new voice to the Council and great partner for me in government.”
“There’s no greater champion on the issues most impacting our community than Maura Healey,” said Janey. “Our Attorney General has helped keep people in our district in their homes, she’s brought innovative solutions to criminal justice reforms and she’s protected the most at risk step up toward economic security. I’m honored to have her joining all those who are supporting our campaign and look forward to working with her to make our community safer and stronger.”
Both Janey and Edwards were endorsed by The Boston Globe last week and enjoy the support of Emily’s List, among other organizations. For more information on their campaigns please visit www.kimjaney.org and www.lydiaedwards.org.
