St. John School welcomed NECN to our school to film a “Making the Grade” story about our school’s Immersive Education (iED) program. “Making the Grade” is a series that takes a look at education-related news across New England.
NECN filmed our students using Minecraft and virtual reality (VR) to recreate Boston’s Old North Church as part of our Immersive Education (iED) program. In 2013, we started offering our students access to iED and expanded the program this year to include Minecraft, Scratch Junior, virtual reality (VR) and 3D printing. Students in Grades 3 to 6 use iED technologies and techniques to create their own video games, interactive stories, living cartoons and animations to immerse themselves in history, science, technology, engineering, arts & architecture, and math (STEaM).
This year our Minecraft Club, has been busy learning about architecture, technology and project management as they recreate The Old North Church in the video game Minecraft. The students are learning to work with mathematical concepts, architectural terms and teamwork.
The Immersive Education program at St. John School has already been a great success. Last August students from the program were selected to present and demonstrate their work at an international conference at the MIT Media Lab, and were featured at the international Immersive Education Summit at Boston College.
