The following commentary was submitted by North End resident, Forbes Dewey.
We have had several comments about the architecture in Boston recently and at least one article by a normally astute reporter really missed the point. First, there was no mention of what I consider to be the four classics of Boston: the Customs House Tower; Faneuil Hall; the John Hancock Tower; and Copley Church.
Putting Chiofaro and other current developers in the same league is an insult to our sensibilities. In fact, the non-descript architecture of the packed developments that have arisen and continue to unfold near the TD Garden block our view of the Customs House Tower from the Zakim Bridge, which is also another notable and positive piece of the Boston architectural scene.
The totally forgettable architecture of recently-approved buildings in Boston has been a real insult to the heritage and potential of the city. The good news is that Delaware North/ Boston Properties did roll out a very creative plan. The bad news is that they are only ready to commit today to the most mundane and mediocre part of the plan, and still no commitment for the supermarket that was a key approval point of the first phase for local residents.
