On Thursday, October 17th, several members of OneBeacon Insurance Group, (Meredith Atwood, Bernice Ford, Gordon Lammert, Mary Matarazzo and Meredith Walton) in Boston’s Financial District, participated in the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) Week of Giving. The group volunteered their time at St. John School in the North End by reading to our K5 and 1st Grade students.
Noted Principal, Karen McLaughlin “St. John School was honored to be recognized by the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation and we thank the team from OneBeacon Insurance Group for coming to our school and reading to the children. Our students really enjoyed having our special guests read stories to them and they were full of excitement and questions.”
The IICF joins together insurance companies for an eight-day industry-wide program to use their collective strengths to provide grants, volunteer service and leadership to the communities in which they do business. In 2013, IICF announced the launch of the IICF National Early Childhood Education Initiative which focuses on literacy for young children, particularly those in underserved communities around the U.S. Closing the literacy gap is an IICF national priority.
IICF has partnered with Sesame Workshop for the National Early Childhood Education Initiative. Reading makes a world of difference in learning for children. Studies show that reading to children has many benefits and a higher aptitude for learning as well as better language and communication skills.
