Neighborhood Photo: Joe “Ronnie Mason” Marino Swan Dive

A 90-Foot Swan Dive: Joseph Marino shown soaring into the air from tall pile-driver back of North End Park.

In the summer of 1940, my father Joe Marino completed a 90-foot swan dive into Boston Harbor. He was one of the old time North End legends!

“Joe makes the plunge with the grace of a bird and splits the water like an arrow. His ability is the result of long years of practice, diving from boat wharves and the recreation pier in North End Park. The old pile driver floats in the rear of 529 Commercial Street. It is only a short swim from North End Park and makes an ideal diving platform. There is a ladder extending up the back of it and the staging work provides well-placed diving boards at any height the athlete may prefer.”
