MassArt, the nation’s first and only public college of art and design and North Bennet Street School present “We Made It,” a showcase of unique handmade furniture (and a few non-furniture pieces) by Liz Welch, Sue Muller and Heather Dawson, the first three students to graduate from the MassArt Furniture Design Certificate program this Spring.
The free, public exhibition runs weekdays from June 11 – July 2, 2014, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm in the Windgate Gallery at North Bennet Street School, 150 North Street.
On Saturday, June 21 from 6 to 8pm, a reception will be held at the gallery to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates. All are welcome to come meet the artists and enjoy live music, refreshments and a live demonstration of folding furniture pieces.
The Furniture Design Certificate Program, developed in 2011, is unique a collaboration between MassArt and NBSS. The Certificate Program emphasizes design as an iterative process in the creation of studio furniture and the development of each student as an artist/designer and craftsperson. Students develop the ability to design and build unique studio furniture, limited production pieces, and prototype furniture, as well as a basic understanding of issues, materials and production that would constitute an introduction to working in the area of contract furniture.
In order to qualify for the program, students must have earned a High School diploma and successfully completed two courses at NBSS: Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking and Fundamentals of Machine Woodworking. The program’s eight core courses, complemented by two studio electives, are structured to build skills while developing each student’s unique vision and artistic identity. The program consists of 29 credits and takes 2 ½ years to complete. The exceptional facilities at the North Bennet Street School and MassArt’s Huntington Avenue campus give students the space and resources to pursue their goals.
