The mayor closed numerous other City schools (at least one of which was recently renovated) because he said there were too many seats for the enrollment. Now we can't find the additional space needed for the Eliot School; and Menino says he can't afford adaptive renovation of these buildings. What's wrong with this picture?

As to the buildings' sale: I'm assuming the two dozen bidders were given to understand by Menino that they should not bid on the two surplus buildings, so he can funnel that property to the North Bennet St. School at a low price. Is that to please the NBSS board, which includes some heavy hitters (like Comcast mogul Amos Hostetter)? We should be getting the most for our public property; we need the money, don't we (see above)? I'm surprised Menino isn't doing his usual trick, giving the buildings away to the BRA, so it can just hand them, without even the pretense of bidding, to his favored recipient, and then gobble up the proceeds. I suppose as long as no one else dares to bid, this will work.
